HOW DOES REIKI WORK?

Reiki can be described as a subtle adaptogen, as it interacts with the body's control centre, gently encouraging all internal systems towards a state of balance (homeostasis). Thus it helps the body access its self-regulatory mechanisms and inherent healing ability.

Currently, the exact way in which Reiki functions has not been described scientifically. One of the strongest leads in recent research has been provided by Reiki's impact on nervous system functioning, and accordingly its wide range of action irrespective of the symptoms or the awareness of the receiver. A number of studies are in progress, investigating aspects of clinical effectiveness such as physiological changes occurring in the autonomous nervous system during a Reiki treatment, which may ultimately contribute to an explanation.

Based on observation of the speed and nonlocality of physical response to Reiki treatment, another hypothesis proposes that Reiki might be involved in the alignment of quantum events, initiating a "phase change" at the quantum level. To date there is no data to support this idea.

Qualitative research has shown that Reiki can induce a liminal state of consciousness (similar to the transition phase between waking and sleeping), akin to the operative part in age-old healing rituals. This profoundly relaxed state may be one of the factors contributing to the efficacy of Reiki as a healing modality.

In summary, Reiki does not target the disease, but instead empowers the person experiencing the disease to deal with it in the most efficient way. Because of this non-specific mode of action complex conditions such as IBS or depression usually respond to Reiki.

For healthy individuals, Reiki is highly beneficial as a means of maintaining homeostasis. It allows the body and mind to recharge 'internal batteries', thus preventing burnout, building resilience and inner strength, and enhancing the overall quality of life. In addition, it enhances creativity and intuition by centring recipients and putting them in touch with themselves.

Treatments can be administered stand-alone with great success, and also enhance the effect of other therapeutic modalities. Reiki will work very well in conjunction with conventional Western medicine, lightening side effects and increasing tolerance to invasive procedures.

Thus, Reiki should be understood as complementary and integrative, rather than 'alternative' therapy. There are no known contra-indications for Reiki.
